Meelick Eyrecourt GAA Club are delighted to congratulate Jack Lucas for his recent induction into the Báireoirí Na Gaillimhe Hurling Hall of Fame.

This is a tremendous honour for Jack, his wife Anne and the entire Lucas family and an acknowledgement of his significant contribution to Galway hurling. To see so many legends of our game come together to celebrate and honour one of our own brings great pride to us all at Meelick Eyrecourt GAA and no doubt to Jack and the entire Lucas family.

Jack is one of our most famous sons and wore the Meelick Eyrecourt and Galway jerseys with great distinction over many years. Anyone who ever played with Jack or witnessed his exploits on the playing field can attest to his outstanding ability, character, toughness and respect in how he played the game. Simply put, Jack could out-hurl the very best and as another famous son of Meelick Eyrecourt GAA, Seán Silke remarked, “Jack was that good”. Those of us who were unlucky not to witness Jack hurling first hand, can only listen to the stories of his class and note the high regard to which Jack is still spoken to this day.

It was so fitting to have our great captain Joe Connolly, on behalf of Báireoirí Na Gaillimhe, to induct Jack into the Hurling Hall of Fame. When such an icon and hero of Galway hurling refers to you as a legend you know that Jack was truly something special.

It is also a great testament to the person Jack is that people speak so highly of him as a person and the true gentleman that he is as much as they do his ability of the hurling field. The large attendance at his home for his induction into the Báireoirí Na Gaillimhe Hurling Hall of Fame is a real reflection of the respect and esteem Jack is held by his former teammates, opponents, family and friends.

Those present were privileged to share stores and relive the great times of the past, the battles on the hurling field and to share stories of Jack. The common thread was “Jack could do it all and was that good”.

Congratulations Jack, for this well deserved honour.
